Or asked you to sign a few forms? That’s probably the reason you are reading this page. You were just in a car accident, now you have to figure out how to fix your car, treat your injuries, and get the insurance companies to pay your medical bills. So, has the adjuster:
- Told you, that your accident was minor so they were going to pay very little or nothing at all
- Asked you to give a recorded statement, the day after an accident
- Said they had a few forms for you to sign
- Told you that your case was bogus, and your injuries were not real
- Offered you a quick settlement, that seems real low
Insurance adjusters will do and say all of this, and more, to do their job. And it is their job to pay as little to you as possible. They will employ any method to do their job, whether ethical, or not.
So many accident victims, not thinking their case is large enough to hire an attorney, will try and settle with the adjuster by themselves. But the insurance adjuster has one advantage, they know exactly what they are doing. They have their objective, which is to pay you as little as possible, and they have the experience, they do this every day, with some adjusters having several hundred open files.
To you, this is probably your first experience with an injury claim. It’s a new, confusing, and intimidating process.
So how do you deal with the insurance adjuster? You don’t.
Not at first. There are times when you want the adjuster to know how severe your injuries are, but for the most part, it is best not to say anything to the insurance companies. Anything you say, can and most likely will be used against you.
They’ll try and get a recorded statement immediately after the accident. They know that injuries sometimes takes days before you feel them. They can get you to say, on a recorded tape, that you don’t feel pain, or were not injured, before the injuries set in.
So the best advice is to cut of communication to the insurance companies, and seek consultation with an attorney. Even if you don’t hire an attorney right away, or at all, it is best to get a consultation, as you will know, you should not speak to the insurance adjusters. And then:
